Data Visualization / JavaScript Developer

Data Visualization / JavaScript Developer

Sage Bionetworks is recruiting for an individual to develop engaging ways to visually interact with large public biomedical research results on the web.  Sage is a Seattle, WA based non-profit research organization that seeks to develop predictors of disease and accelerate health research through the creation of open systems, incentives, and standards. We create strategies and platforms that empower researchers to share and interpret data on a colossal scale, crowdsource tests for new hypotheses, and contribute to knowledge through community challenges.

We work collaboratively with academic researchers around the world to perform their research and share their data and results. A number of our collaborations have generated large, heterogeneous, publicly available data sets in the fields of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. To increase accessibility to these complex datasets, we are seeking to develop engaging ways to visually interact with these biomedical research results on the web. You would be joining a team of computational scientists, software engineers, and data scientists to help communicate scientific results and provide intuitive interaction with the underlying data to engage users with open and collaborative science research.

Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Develop and maintain compelling and visually appealing interactive visualizations for public consumption
  • Work with Sage Bionetworks research scientists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, and external researchers
  • Work with the Sage Bionetworks engineering team to design and test features
  • Work with data curators and engineers to design backend data stores
  • Stay current with developments and innovation in data visualization techniques
  • Establish visual appeal and performance of the tools
  • Manage and document all code in a versioning system (Git)

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field and 1+ years of experience
  • Experience developing public-facing JavaScript web applications using libraries such as D3.js and jQuery
  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript technologies, libraries, and frameworks such as Node.js, React, and Angular
  • Understanding of design patterns such as MVC/MVP
  • Knowledge of JavaScript concepts (promises, closures, callbacks)
  • Demonstrated understanding of data visualization principles and user experience
  • Experience visualizing large, heterogeneous datasets
  • Desire to understand and promote open and collaborative scientific research

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • An understanding of scientific research and statistical analysis
  • Experience working and communicating effectively with academic and scientific researchers
  • Experience designing data stores for real time querying of data
  • Knowledge of version control systems like Git
  • Experience interacting with and implementing APIs (REST)
  • Experience determining appropriate chart and plot types for compelling information display
  • Experience with cross-browser development
  • Python or R scripting
  • Experience with data storytelling

About Sage Bionetworks

Sage Bionetworks is Seattle Washington based non-profit organization dedicated to advancing biomedical research through the implementation of reproducible, open science.  Using cutting edge machine-learning methodologies in collaboration with scientists around the world, we build robust computational models of disease-related phenotypes through integrative analysis of large-scale genomic, imaging, and mHealth data sets. To enhance collaborative efforts, we leverage a compute platform (www.synapse.org) for sharing research insights in a transparent, reproducible fashion.

Sage Bionetworks is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  We offer competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including relocation benefits to bring the right talent to our team.

Current Positions

Computational Oncology

The Computational Biology group focuses on developing integrative probabilistic models for prediction of disease phenotypes and validating of hypotheses generated by novel methodologies. Currently opportunities include: positions in Oncology focused on conducting original research in analyzing large-scale high dimensional genomics data to develop predictive models of cancer phenotypes. Positions in collaboration with the recently merged Sage/DREAM effort, focused on designing and implementing crowd-sourced collaborative challenges around cancer phenotype prediction problems. Positions in stem cell bioinformatics with a focus on development of the data and analysis bioinformatics portal for the Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium, as well as research projects on modeling molecular mechanisms underlying stem cell differentiation.

Mobile Health

Sage Bionetworks’ mobile health (mHealth) program is designed to improve disease characterization through the use of sensor-based technologies and bi-directional feedback to improve health monitoring and provide quantitative metrics to assess disease impact on health and on quality of life. We maximize the insights gained from these efforts by providing them through Synapse, a collaborative compute platform. Our mHealth team includes expertise in software engineering (both iOS and Android), clinical study design and development, data governance and data analysis. We are actively involved in projects across a range of disease areas and within the Precision Medicine Initiative.

Operations and Administration

The Administration and Research Operations group at Sage Bionetworks works across all departments to oversee day to day operations of the organization. The team oversees a variety of areas including human resources, grant management, contracts, and finance.

Current Positions:

Systems Biology

The Systems Biology research group at Sage Bionetworks is working to understand the underlying mechanisms causal to common disease. We use large-scale genomic analysis to identify disease subclasses, generate diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, and to identify pathophysiology causal to disease in collaboration with academic and industry partners. Our current portfolio is focused on neurobiology, spanning both neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, and includes projects in other disease areas including immunology, metabolic disease and craniofacial deformation.

Technology Platforms & Services

We’re working on the tools and platforms required to gather, share and use biomedical data in novel ways. These are targeted both at the research community, as well as organizations and individuals who are involved in providing data and being involved in the research process. They range from the technology platforms Synapse and BRIDGE, through novel methods of addressing governance issues around the distribution of human data such as E-Consent, to the ability to run Challenges to solve data-driven questions through our partnership with DREAM.
