Applied ELSI Research Intern

Sage Bionetworks’ Applied Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research team is seeking interns looking to implement their knowledge of qualitative research in large-scale open science research initiatives.

We are currently seeking one full time or two part-time interns for 6 months (January-July 2023). Additionally, we are seeking one full-time intern for 3 months (Summer 2023). What you’ll be doing: 

  • In collaboration with our Applied ELSI Research team:
    • Qualitative data collection from focus groups, including:
      • Scheduling
      • Materials preparation
      • Communication with participants
      • Facilitation
      • Use of real-time electronic collaboration tools (e.g., Miro, Mentimeter, Padlet)
    • Coding qualitative data, which may include use of one or more qualitative coding platforms (e.g., NVivo, Dedoose)
    • Analyzing qualitative data and sharing insights through written reports and verbal presentations

We’d love to hear from you if: 

  • You are passionate about qualitative research and have a working knowledge of (preferably experience assisting with and/or conducting) qualitative data collection, qualitative coding, and/or qualitative data analysis
  • You have at least a BS/BA or other scientific degree; emphasis on health science, public health and health education preferred
  • You have excellent verbal communication skills, including experience with public speaking and/or group facilitation
  • You have strong written communication skills for diverse audiences
  • You are comfortable balancing multiple tasks and work well in a collaborative team setting
  • You are comfortable working independently on assigned tasks and asking clarifying questions to enable efficient work

Applications will be accepted until December 14th, 2022. There are two openings for this internship. Six months at part time or full time with a start date in January 2023 and a three month summer internship with a flexible start date.

Software Engineering Intern

By improving the way scientists collaborate and by increasing the reliability of research, we will improve human health.

We are currently recruiting for Software Engineering Interns to join the technology team responsible for the design, creation, testing, and deployment of the Sage Platform. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands on software development experience while working on a project that has the potential to make significant advances in the area of human health.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own a software development project adding new features to a Sage platform in areas such as cloud computing, scientific / statistical analysis, data visualization, or mobile health
  • Collaborate with a senior engineer mentor in a collaborative environment including team software design and technology review meetings
  • Develop experience writing code for and working on a cloud computing platform
  • Learn practical professional engineering skills working on a team that utilizes agile development methods
  • Work on a small team (~7 people) and gain exposure to the complete software development lifecycle; we deploy new code for our scientist users several times a month
  • Write open-source code; your resume can link to your code written during your internship!

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Are enrolled in or have recently completed an accredited degree program or technology training program working towards a degree / certification in computer science or a related discipline.
  • Have not previously held a full-time position in the tech industry. Applicants with prior internships and/or volunteer coding experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Have the ability to commit to a 6 month, full time position
  • Have experience with:
    •  a variety of operating systems including Unix/Linux/Windows
    •  programming languages (Java, Python. etc.)
    •  Web design languages (Javascript, Html, CSS)
    •  Databases (MySQL, etc.)
  • Have some familiarity with software development tools (GitHub, Eclipse, Maven, Jira Studio, etc.)
  • Have strong verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Are a self-starter with the ability to multitask and drive projects to completion
